At the start of the year in January, Northern Power Women attended the BBC 50:50 Equality Project event at Media City in Manchester, and our founder Simone Roche MBE was featured on BBC world news in an interview about maintaining a work-life balance. Simone was also featured on the Natwest Podcast with June Sarpong, and our own NPW podcast was recorded at Burnley College in January, and then at Bradford University in February.
As the world was plunged into lockdowns and social distancing policies, our reliance on media grew, and NPW pivoted into this new content hungry world. In April we kick-started our focus groups for our Northern Power Futures podcast, and also upped the frequency of our episodes from monthly to weekly! In July our podcast won silver in the Best Business Podcast Category at the British Podcast Awards 2020 and in October, Ngunan Adamu joined us on the NPW Podcast, and then in November Julie Newton gave her Life Lessons in an inclusion special episode.
As well as creating our own media, we have frequently featured on various national media outlets, taking part in discussions central to the NPW mission. In July, Simone Roche MBE featured on BBC News to discuss the Summer budget, and in August our digital content assistant Eleanor Keegan took part in a discussion on public sexual harassment Live on BBC Radio Merseyside. Later, in October, Eleanor and Simone teamed up on BBC News to discuss the Levelling Up report and the mental health of young people during the pandemic. Simone has also been featured on the My Friends in the North podcast in July, as well as the #Unscripted podcast alongside Shelley Zalis.
We have been busy using our platform to create a more representative media, launching our #AmplifiedVoices series with Ngunan Adamu followed by Carol Ann Whitehead, Karen Finlayson and Ranjana Bell. In August, we launched our #BeHeard campaign in order to encourage equality and diversity in media, and we were quickly joined by Marnie Millard OBE who came on board as a #BeHeard Ambassador. Later in November, Simone spoke to Linzi Boyd as part of ‘LB Presents’, the interview series with business and world leaders who are impacting change in the world.
