I was blown away by the amazing innovation, opportunities and excellence in the North showcased at the outstanding three-day Northern Powerhouse Business Summit event, as part of the wider Great Exhibition of the North, which is taking place in Newcastle right now.
I didn’t get to attend every session but what I did see left me inspired and motivated. Day one was themed Great Innovators which was extra fitting given the whole event was being held at Boiler Shop, former base of our local innovator Robert Stephenson, crucible of the Industrial Revolution. I loved hearing inspiring tales from innovators across the North – Elaine Warbuton, CEO of biotech company QuantuMDx sharing the great innovations they are working on that have the potential to save 100 million lives by 2050 with the support of Bill Gates (who apparently drinks coke and eats grapes all day) and Wayne Hemingway who spoke with humour and passion about how being the time for the North and we have never had so much opportunity here, rather than London.
Day two, Great Opportunities, was a popular one with the draw of Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England speculating on the impact to our economy if England win the World Cup – a very real possibility as I write this #itscominghome….
It was fitting to end with the Great Futures day. Northern Powerhouse Minister, Jake Berry delighted the large crowd with the announcement of NP11 and Accenture shared how Artificial Intelligence will support the 4th Industrial Revolution. We also had our very own Simone Roche on a panel with role model and agent of change Rob Mukherjee from Vodafone and Emma Codd from Deloitte talking about how we accelerate diversity.
I often moan that nothing to do with the Northern Powerhouse comes to Newcastle. Well, I can’t do that anymore – what a mint event!
