In 1986 Julie started Pyronix Limited.  A security equipment manufacturer.  Some 30 years later it was turning over almost £30m, employed 200 people on 4 factory sites in Rotherham.  In 2016,  the business was sold to a Chinese (part state owned) inward investor a 3.8billion turnover manufacturer who is investing on growing the business in the UK.

1st woman President of the Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.  1998 – 2002.
Chair of the Government’s RSA (Regional Selective Assistance) Grants – 1996 – 2002.
Board Member and then Chair of Yorkshire Forward (the Government Regional Development Agency).  2002 – 2012.
Commissioner and then Chair of UK Commission for Employment and Skills. 2007 – 2017.
Chair of Maltby Learning Trust (a 6 school Academy Trust) – 2010 to date.
Julie has been asked by the Department for Local Government to act as an Intervention Commissioner to help both Doncaster (2010  –  2014. ) and Rotherham (2015 – 2019) to improve their Governance and decision making for the benefit of the citizens of those towns.  Both interventions were the most severe at the time the Government enacted the Directors for the Intervention.
1st woman Chairman of the British Security Industry Association 2010 – 2012.
Chair of the Small Business Council (24 Entrepreneurs who advised Government and policy makers on Small business issues) 2005 – 2007.  
Julie has also served on many committees advising HM Treasury, DWP, DTI/BIS/BEIS.
