Sarah Maskell MBE

Power List 2018
Head of Diversity and Inclusion, Royal Air Force

I am responsible for providing strategic guidance to in excess of 40,000 personnel, employed in a variety of locations across the globe and to deliver a comprehensive, holistic package of D&I initiatives and projects within an overarching programme of leadership-led activity. I have worked on a positive change in culture and have been exposed to all levels of the organisation to ensure that any cultural developments underpin the current RAF Core Values and Standards. I regularly provide bespoke support and advice to the Senior Executive Leadership team and engagement with our Diversity Champion and Diversity Advocates is testament to the journey the RAF has taken on D&I matters.

I engage regularly with a wide variety of external and peer organisations to share best practice and develop initiatives that will serve to better the ‘lived experience’ of the Service personnel and their families, adding value to their roles in delivering the UK Defence Vision. I am passionate about addressing under-representation and have worked with WISE and Royal Aeronautical Society to focus on the challenges in securing a strong future for females in STEM and non-typical careers. My work in the gender space also translates into ‘Women in Peace and Security’ work with the UN, FCO and NGO’s.

I aspire to provide transparent data for evidence-based decisions that represents a workforce who feel valued, respected and inspired to reach their potential. In sum, I aspire for inclusion.

I’m supporting Northern Power Women because… women must have access and support to see the landscape of opportunities to plan the route to their future.

What does Northern Power Women mean to you?

Collaboration, Strength, Knowledge and Friendship.

What is your greatest achievement?

Offering inspiration and leadership to others.

Why is it important to champion role models in the North?

There must be a clear pathway for girls and women in the North to thrive and have role models to follow. Evidence of challenges and successes will be vital.
